How much does it cost the state to enroll kids in Medicaid and CHIP? I don’t know what it is in Texas, but last week I got a glimpse of what it cost in Louisiana, and I’m thinking it’s not much different here. Maybe higher. Last week, the Urban Institute released the most in-depth analysis [...]

“How many legs does a dog have if you call the tail a leg? Four. Calling a tail a leg doesn’t make it a leg.” — Abraham Lincoln Since I work for an accounting firm, I’ve always enjoyed the simplicity of this riddle. And, today is Lincoln’s birthday so it seemed appropriate. So, in Texas, [...]
The high cost of family coverage in Texas

We hear a lot about how Texas has a low cost of living. True, except in one area: health insurance. Last week, the Commonwealth Fund compared premiums for family coverage across the nation. The US average was $13, 871. Texas was $14,526. The real rub was the Commonwealth Fund analyzed premiums as a percent of [...]

Imagine thousands of dollars sitting in a bank. It’s in an account expressly set aside for you, but you don’t know it’s there. Or, maybe someone told you about part of it, but you had no idea there was more. Meanwhile, your family is scraping by, living paycheck to paycheck, with little hope of getting [...]

Texas enrollments in children’s Medicaid and CHIP took big a drop in January. Improving economy or re-enrollment snafus? Hard to know. In Tarrant County, 2,961 fewer kids were on children’s Medicaid, but 65 more were on CHIP. Statewide, 21,109 fewer kids were on children’s Medicaid, and 1,088 fewer were on CHIP.

Not everyone agrees with me on this — especially in Texas — but I believe all kids should have equal access to the healthcare they need. As a nation, we are a long ways from that. The U.S. is a patchwork of coverage requirements, a fact underlined this week in a new report, Performing Under [...]

In this month — November of 2011 — let it be recorded that 190,601 kids in Tarrant County have Medicaid or CHIP coverage. More than ever before. I could have rounded that off to 190,600. But, that wouldn’t be right. I’m thankful for each one, and you should be, too. Yes, enrollment was up in [...]

Got a couple of thousand dollars to send to the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction, otherwise known as the “Super Committee”? Me neither. Don’t sweat it. We’ve already been outspent. Way outspent. You see, the congressional Super Committee is tasked with finding $1.2 trillion in deficit reduction measures by Thanksgiving. That makes them very [...]

The number of children covered by CHIP and Medicaid dropped in October, both in Tarrant County and statewide. It’s discouraging, but this happens every October. Kind of insane, huh? One person explained it to me a couple of years ago that September has fewer working days so fewer state workers are available to process applications. [...]

I have a friend who’s an executive at a health insurance company. When people ask him the biggest problem facing his company, he has a standard answer: Too many people can’t afford his product. More and more families are getting priced out of the market. Last week, Kaiser Family Foundation released its annual Employer Health [...]
