Good news. More of our children have coverage. After a dip last month, enrollment gains are back. Click on the chart to enlarge.

For me, the story of the week was about how Wal-Mart is taking on Medicaid bureaucracy in Arkansas. A CNN Money story said that Wal-Mart is training its in-house team of 142 lawyers to help patients with an array of issues associated with Medicaid. They’re training them how to fill out the right forms, and [...]

I know I should be feeling good that the Legislature passed and Gov. Rick Perry signed the Light Bulb Freedom of Choice Act. Thank goodness, I can still buy whatever light bulbs I want, regardless of how inefficient they are.  And, according to the news, the anti-groping legislation is still alive, legislation that Rep. David [...]

This month, the federal Medicaid/CHIP Commission (also known as MACPAC) released its June report to Congress, and it had some interesting state-by-state comparisons. The figures are for 2008, so they’re a bit dated but I assume they’re the latest available for all 50 states. According to the tables, Texas spent 35% of Medicaid funding on [...]

Tarrant County enrollments were up slightly this month, after a slight drop in March. All in all, Tarrant County fared better than the state as a whole, which has experienced a drop of 15,771 kids off Medicaid and CHIP (mostly Medicaid) during the last two months. We’re still up for the year: 926 more Tarrant [...]

I’ll write more later, but just wanted to say what a satisfying trip we had to Austin yesterday to tell legislators that we believe in investing in the state’s children.  We made some noise about the importance of Medicaid and CHIP, and of having a balanced approach to balancing the budget. Here’s some photos, and [...]

Life is unfair. I know that. This week, I was jarred by studies and stories that centered on fairness. In every case, I questioned how I could try to rebalance an inequitable system. Fairness matters, and we are its guardians. Is it fair that some Americans have better access to medical care when they need [...]
